The draw for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup has been made, making the new version of the competition a little more real ahead of the summer.
The reformatted Club World Cup has not been without controversy – it was originally supposed to begin in China in 2021 until the Covid-19 pandemic pushed it back several years – while many big clubs are absent from 'a so-called global celebration of football, with some strange qualifiers too.
European teams were allocated 12 spots, while South America had six. Most expect the ultimate winner to come from one or other of these continents. There are also four for Asia, Africa and North America, with only one representative from Oceania. No club from the same confederation may be included in the playing group, with the exception of Europe. Half of the groups will therefore include two European teams.
The qualification criteria ranged from winning continental titles in the last four years to high-ranking clubs within each confederation – but a maximum of two per country and a 'host': Inter Miami.
