KL Rahul's fortunes took a dramatic turn in the second Test against Australia in Adelaide. The 8th of India's innings turned into a roller coaster, providing breathtaking moments and unexpected respites for the Indian batting.
A lucky escape for KL Rahul: The drama without the ball
Scott Boland threw a great first in the 8th. He lured Rahul into an attempted attempt outside off. The ball kissed the rim – or so it seemed – and flew straight into the goalkeeper's gloves. The on-field umpire raised his finger without hesitation and Rahul began the long walk back to the pavilion. Virat Kohli stood near the boundary ropes to come out to bat.
But then came the turning point. The third umpire intervened and declared the ball void, which came as a relief to Rahul and the Indian camp. And then, to top it off, the replay came: there was no benefit to begin with. This double reprieve set the tone for an eventful ending.
Another lifeline for KL Rahul
Just when things seemed to be settling down, the fifth ball of the same game brought even more drama. Boland delivered a complete delivery that took shape late on. Rahul beat him to it and the ball flew to Usman Khawaja at first slip.
Khawaja, however, could not hold on. The ball slipped through his hands, giving Rahul another chance. This was Khawaja's third dropped catch in the series so far.
Explained: Here's the reason the Australian team wore black armbands in the second Test in Adelaide
The events seemed like poetic justice for Rahul, who suffered a controversial dismissal during the first Test in Perth. There he was taken out despite inconclusive replays suggesting he might not have outplayed the ball.
In Adelaide, it was as if karma balanced the scales. Two lifelines in one stood in stark contrast to the misfortune Rahul faced in Perth. Earlier, Indian team skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first.
India got off to a nightmare start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being sent off for a golden duck on the first ball of the match. However, KL Rahul And Shubman Gil quickly helped India recover. At the time of writing, India were 1/61 in 16.2 overs.
