Rangpur Riders contested GSL final amid BCB NOC problem for three keys Bangladesh players. This happened before the series against the West Indies.
GSL passes the final
On December 6, Rangpur Riders played the GSL final amid BCB's NOC problem against Bangladesh's three key players. Last minute uncertainties arose in the final match regarding the availability of Rishad Hossain, Afif Hossain and Soumya Sarkar.
The match took place in Providence, Guyana. Before the series against the West Indies in St. Kitts, this happened just two days before the series.
Rangpur Riders reached the final after defeating Lahore Qalandars. With the NOC problem, Soumya Sarkar had missed his flight to Guyana, where he was set to join the team for the upcoming ODI series.
BCB and NOC complications
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the Rangpur Riders to release the three players. Rishad Hossain, Afif Hossain and Soumya Sarkar were expected to feature in the national ODI squad for the series against West Indies. On December 8, the ODI series of BAN vs WI will begin.
Afif had a valid NOC until December 7, but that of Rishad and Soumya had expired. BCB refused to extend its permits despite Rangpur's formal request.
The franchise tried its best to establish contact with BCB President Faruque Ahmed on his way to New York.
The situation worsened when Rangpur warned to forfeit the final, stating that missing the match would harm the global reputation of Bangladesh cricket. The franchise has emphasized its national representation, urging BCB to reconsider its position.
“If they remain firm in their decision, Rangpur will have to forfeit the final match without even entering the field,” said a statement from Rangpur Riders. “Such an incident would undoubtedly tarnish the reputation of Bangladesh cricket on the world stage as it is extremely rare for a team to miss a final due to a lack of players.
“Moreover, in the GSL, Rangpur represents not only itself but the entire nation of Bangladesh. Therefore, such an unfortunate event would also be deeply disappointing for cricket lovers.”
Tournament Adjustment and Player Shortage
The GSL final was initially postponed to December 6 to avoid the clash with the Bangladesh ODI series. However, the player shortage has already occurred on the Riders side.
The franchise missed out on key foreign players like Khushdil Shah and Matthew Forde due to NOC issues and injuries.
The uncertainty persisted until the final moments, but the competition ultimately took place as planned.
