Google has confirmed that some of its former Pixel Phones will benefit from two additional years of Android updates beyond what was assured when the phones were launched. The most venerable of the list, the Pixel 6 launched in 2021, will receive its last update in 2026.
These expanded updates are welcome for Pixel phone owners who were only promised three years of new Android features. Even when released, they were outpaced by longer support warranties from competitors like Samsung, which have only grown in the meantime. While the latest Pixels and Galaxy Phones promises seven years of operating system updates, Google extending the shelf life of its older models is a welcome move for those who might otherwise need to purchase new phones next year once their Android updates run out.
Google made the surprise announcement alongside its December software update (which is now rolling out to Android 15 devices). On a support pageGoogle has listed which of its older phones will get a total of five years of software updates from their launch date, so the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive their latest Android updates in 2026, while that the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro And Pixel 6a will get theirs until 2027. Pixel 7a And Pixel folding will receive updates until 2028.
While Google initially suggested that the Pixel 6 would get five years of updates, it was less confident when it launched the Pixel 7 series, saying its 2022 phones would get “at least three” years of updates. to Android level. The company was more assertive, promising only three years of updates for the more affordable Pixel 6a and Pixel 7a.
These update expansions do not include Pixel 5 or older Google phones. The oldest supported phone is the Pixel 6, which was the first to use the Google-designed Tensor chipset.
