Gout Gout, 16, ran the 200 meters in 20.04 seconds at the Australian Schools Championships on Saturday, breaking the national record held since the 1968 Olympics by Peter Norman.
His run was initially marked at 20.07 seconds, but was later revised to 20.04 seconds, putting him below the 20.06 seconds run by Norman which earned him a silver medal.
With this, Gout becomes the fastest 16-year-old ever.
“It’s pretty crazy,” Gout told Reuters.
“Right now I can't understand it, but I guess tonight when I go to bed I'll think about it. They're adults. And I'm just a kid, and I lead them ( downwards).
“I was chasing this record, but I didn't think it would happen this year. I thought maybe it would happen next year, or the year after that.”
Gout also ran the fourth fastest time ever by an Australian in the 100m heats with 10.04 seconds despite high winds.
Now, Gout is focused on breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100m and the 20-second barrier in the 200m.
He will also focus on the 2032 Olympics being held in Brisbane when he turns 24, right next to where he grew up.
“I always did what I said,” Gout added Saturday. “So if I say something, it comes to me and I pursue it until I get it.”
