GlobalFoundries and IBM introduced Thursday that they’ve settled lawsuits alleging that GlobalFoundries violated a contract with IBM and that the pc big misused the chipmaker’s commerce secrets and techniques.
The businesses mentioned in a joint assertion that the phrases of the settlement have been confidential and would enable them to “discover new alternatives for collaboration.”
GlobalFoundries bought IBM’s semiconductor factories in 2015. IBM sued the Malta, N.Y.-based firm in New York state court docket in 2021 for allegedly breaching a contract of $1.5 billion geared toward manufacturing high-performance chips for IBM.
GlobalFoundries, which is majority-owned by Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, individually sued Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM in New York federal court docket in 2023 for allegedly misappropriating its commerce secrets and techniques from manufacturing chips and sharing them with Intel and the Japanese consortium Rapidus in partnerships with each. companies.
Spokespeople for Intel and Rapidus didn’t instantly reply to requests for touch upon the settlement.
The U.S. Commerce Division awarded GlobalFoundries $1.5 billion in November to develop its semiconductor manufacturing in New York and Vermont.
