PARIS (Reuters) – Iran's acceleration of uranium enrichment to near bomb levels is “extremely serious”, has no civilian justification and contradicts Tehran's claims that he wants serious nuclear negotiations, a Western diplomatic source said on Saturday.
Iran has long denied wanting to acquire nuclear weapons.
The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, told Reuters on Friday that Iran was significantly accelerating the enrichment of its uranium to a purity level of 60%, close to the level of about 90% which is military grade.
The International Atomic Energy Agency later confirmed in a confidential report to member states that Iran was accelerating uranium enrichment, a process that refines the raw material so it can be used as fuel in the production of civilian nuclear energy or, potentially, in nuclear weapons.
“Reports reported by the Agency's director general of a significant increase in Iran's capacity to produce highly enriched uranium to 60% are extremely serious,” the source told Reuters. Western diplomacy.
“These measures have no credible civilian justification and could instead directly fuel a military nuclear program if Iran makes the decision… They are in contradiction with Iran's declarations of its desire to return to credible negotiations .”
