It was not immediately possible to reach the nun's lawyer for comment.

A police press release said two local politicians were also arrested and 1.8 million euros ($1.89 million) seized in the operation. The statement did not name any of the people targeted by the raid.

The suspects are accused of various crimes including mafia association, vote buying, illegal possession of weapons, money laundering, loan usurpation, drug trafficking and false invoices, adds the police press release.

The alleged gang was linked to issuing invoices worth €12 million for non-existent transactions that allowed complicit entrepreneurs to reduce their income and evade tax in exchange for paid commission to the mafiosi.
