José Mourinho has warned Pep Guardiola that his record in the Premier League will always be tainted by the 115 financial charges weighing on the head of Manchester City.
Guardiola has recently been mocked by Liverpool fans for City's poor form, but he has been. quick to remind those present at Anfield that he had six Premier League titles to his name as he raised his finger to the crowd.
When it was reported to Guardiola that Mourinho had done something similar to remind fans of his three Premier League titles before being sacked, the City manager replied: “I hope that's not the case for me. But in the end we are similar in some ways. However, he has won three Premier Leagues and I won six. So it's not quite the same, is it?
Mourinho, who now plays in Türkiye with Fenerbahce, did not miss the opportunity to respond to Guardiola's comments.
“I want to win, but I want to win clean and fair,” he began. “If I can’t win cleanly, I’d rather lose.
“Guardiola said something about me. He won six trophies, I won three, but I won fair and clean. If I lose, I want to congratulate my opponent for being better than me. I don't don't want to win by handling 150 cases.
The hearing into the allegations against City is expected to conclude in the coming days, with a possible outcome in February 2025. However, with appeals likely regardless of the verdict, the case is expected to drag on into next year.
One thing is more certain, it is Guardiola's future. The Spaniard, despite City's poor form and signs that a team rebuild may be necessary, signed a new two-year contract to stay at the club, stating that he will stay in Manchester even the club was found guilty of the alleged charges and was relegated from the Premier League.
