Terence Crawford: “I'm not chasing Canelo, I just want to fight the best”

Terence Crawford says he's not “pursuing” Canelo Alvarez because many people think that's why he's campaigning for this fight. Four-division world champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) says he considers Canelo the “most accomplished fighter» next to him and would like to face him.

Don't chase, challenge

Crawford should push for this fight because it would allow the two best North American fighters to face off in a match that could generate interest, make money and entertain the public.

Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KO) has regularly disappointed fans over the past two years since his loss to Dmitri Bivol. People would like to see the Mexican star have an interesting fight against someone they want to see fight. Canelo didn't want to face David Benavidez or David Morrell when they were both 168 years old.

Has Canelo lost his cool?

These fights would have kept Alvarez at the top, facing the best, but he slacked off and showed no desire to test himself. It could be said that Canelo lost his cool and showed fear by choosing not to take on the challenges he once did.

The second fight with Gennady Golovkin In 2018, it was the last time fans saw Alvarez face an opponent whose outcome was not tilted in his favor. People forget that the Bivol fight was considered a sure win for Canelo. The Russian fighter had struggled in a rematch against Craig Richards and looked poor against Umar Salamov.

Crawford, 37, would pose a lesser risk to Canelo compared to Benavidez or Morrell due to his lack of size, power and age. Still, it's a great fight that American and Mexican fans want.

“I wouldn’t say I’m chasing Canelo. I think that's a general statement. I just want the opportunity to fight the best fighter of my generation,” Terence Crawford told Social boxing on why he wants to fight Canelo Alvarez.

“He is the most accomplished fighter in the sport of boxing today, other than me. I would just like to fight another big one. That's all, that's all. If the fight happens, I think it would be the biggest fight in the sport of boxing today,” Crawford said of why he wanted to challenge Canelo.
