An historical relic believed to have been carried by Jesus Christ at his crucifixion has returned to Notre Dame Cathedral, 5 years after it was saved from a fireplace that devastated the church.
The crown of thorns – made up of a circle of rushes enclosed in a crystal and gold tube – was introduced again to the cathedral in a ceremony presided over by the Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich.
The crown was acquired by the French King Louis IX in Constantinople in 1239 for 135,000 livres, virtually half of France’s annual expenditure on the time.
Initially stored on the Sainte-Chapelle, it was transferred to the Notre-Dame treasure in 1806 – till a large hearth in 2019 ravaged the 850-year-old constructing.
Firefighters and policemen fashioned a human chain to rescue relics and different historic objects from the cathedral.
The hearth destroyed its picket interiors earlier than toppling its spire.
The crown, stored on the Louvre museum whereas the famous cathedral has undergone extensive renovationswas positioned in a newly constructed reliquary to exchange the one from 1806.
The ceremony marking his return was led by a procession attended by members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, a Catholic order of chivalry.
The crown of thorns can be on show to the general public from January 10, French media report.
The cathedral reopened to the general public on December 8, following main restoration work involving round 2,000 craftsmen, at an estimated value of €700 million (£582 million).
Its reopening ceremony brought together world leaders. In a speech on the occasion, French President Emmanuel Macron mentioned of the restoration: “We should cherish this lesson of fragility, humility and can.”
