There's something about the Wicked the soundtrack arrives at the end of the year and sneaks into our Spotify Wrapped playlists which just doesn't do the album justice. I know that in a few weeks he will have at least occupied most of the top positions in my rankings. Let's be real, it's probably going to be a longer year on everyone's Wrapped rankings between now and the release of Villain: Part Two.
With this in mind, we drop the needles Nasty part one music starring Ariana Grande as Galinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, whose witch-enemies romance propels the hit musical film. If you're in the same camp (theater) as those of us who have already watched the movie multiple times, there's already a setlist of the tracks we listen to when we're not sitting in Nicole Kidman's AMC Church. Like it or not, there are favorites and least favorites, but good for you if you consider this an album not to be missed. However, here is our ranking of forgettable earworms to favorites of the Wicked soundtrack.
“A Sentimental Man” – Jeff Goldblum
Well, it must be said… whisper singing is not good. I love Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, but verbally slowing down this already least performed entry in the musical soundtrack makes it that much longer for exposition purposes, just when the action is about to to start.
“Something Bad” – Peter Dinklage and Cynthia Erivo
What balances this one out is Cynthia Erivo's singing. Still, this first act number is definitely our first bathroom and snack break when we see it again in the theater. It is obviously important to attend the first round for important exposure purposes. There's nothing so baaaad about it.
“Dear Old Shiz” – Shiz University Choir, Ariana Grande and Wicked Cast
This gives a refresher at magic school; we needed more. I can't wait to walk around a Universal Studios theme park and hear this live. And Grande's bill ate.
“Nobody cries for bad guys” – Ariana Grande and Wicked Cast
We mourn the wicked. I love the play on words here with the crowd chanting “No one cries the bad guy” and Ariana Grande singing “No, we cry the bad guy”, and the two meanings at play with Glinda's high notes hit so hard that the story begins to unfold.
“I’m not that girl” – Cynthia Erivo
We have all experienced the bittersweet moment of unrequited love. It's a good sweet song for Cynthia Erivo to show that Elphaba has multitudes before singing “Defying Gravity”.
“A Short Day” – Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Wicked Cast
We still scream about the [redacted] cameos and work on memorizing new words.
“Ozdust Duo” – The Wicked Orchestra
“Dancing Through Life” is very long in the film – it's basically its own act, but it really shines when Elphaba and Glinda have their bonding moment. The instrumental “Ozdust Duet” is beautiful and evokes all the feelings you get when you find someone who understands you.
“Dancing Through Life” – Jonathan Bailey and Wicked Cast
Okay, even though the beginning is too long, “Dancing Through Life” runs the gamut from settings, from the library to quiet moments between characters we love to sing along to (Um, Nessa? Listen to Nessa? Nessa? Nessa? ), until the breathtaking spectacle. final. It's so much fun to explode out loud.
“The Sorcerer and I” – Cynthia Erivo
The power ballad that is Elphaba's song “I Want” will see more karaoke moments and sing-alongs in the years to come.
“What is this feeling? » – Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and Wicked Cast
This frenetic anthem is going viral for its duet ability and TikTok dance craze with Galinda and her Shiz crew (taps notebook, stomp). We know this because it's in constant rotation in all the other Reel and TikTok samples on our For You pages.
“Popular” – Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande as Galinda singing “Popular” is a classic. It's contagious and sparkling, RIGHT?! Fortunately, a shorter radio edit without dialogue was released. Check it out above!
“Defying gravity” – Cynthia Erivo
Give Cynthia Erivo all the accolades! The timelessness of “Defying Gravity” is enhanced by the talent of Erivo in the role of Elphaba. The extended version is our favorite, but the radio mount (above) will keep you feeling unlimited when you need it.
Wicked is now out in theaters; the singing projections begin on December 25 at a cinema near youthank you for your continued restraint from singing until then. Wicked soundtrack can be found online.
