Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a move away from the club, with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
The 33-year-old central defender will be a free agent in the summer of 2025 and the Reds have now offered him a new contract.
Sources informed Caught Offside that the Dutch international defender rejected Liverpool's offer because it did not meet his expectations. Negotiations on an extension are still ongoing and it will be interesting to see if the two sides can reach an agreement quickly.
Van Dijk has been exceptional for Liverpool this season and they won't want to lose a player of his talent. The 33-year-old is undoubtedly the best central defender in the world this season. Liverpool hope to challenge for major trophies and they can't afford to lose players of his caliberespecially on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, clubs in Saudi Arabia are keen to sign the Liverpool defender and clubs like Barcelona, Juventus and Inter Milan are also looking to offer him an exit route.
Saudi club Al-Nassr have already spoken to the player's representatives to get more information about his situation and they are ready to offer him a two-year contract with the possibility of extending for another year.
Barcelona have also held talks with Van Dijk. However, the Dutch defender said he would wait for the ongoing contract extension talks with Liverpool to conclude and has therefore not yet responded to offers.
Van Dijk has been outstanding for Liverpool since joining the club from Southampton and he has helped them win several trophies during his time at the club. It's no surprise that he's waiting for a lucrative offer at this point in his career. This could be his last opportunity to land an attractive contract.
