Virat Kohli was at the center of yet another Decision Review System (DRS) controversy on the second day of the pink ball Test in Adelaide. The Indian captain expressed his displeasure after Mitchell Swamp survived a close call from LBW in the first session, thanks to the third umpire's interpretation of snicko and lack of conclusive evidence.
The Mitchell Marsh DRS incident
In Australia's 58th innings, Marsh faced Ravichandran Ashwin. Coming down the field, Marsh was hit on the pad with his bat near the ball. On-field umpire Richard Illingworth ruled it out, prompting the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to call the DRS.
Replays showed a spike on the snicko as the ball passed near the bat and pad. The third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, was unconvinced whether the ball had hit the mat or the bat first. He decided not to overturn the decision on the field, allowing Marsh to remain on the field.
“I wasn’t convinced if it was a bat or a pad first,” Kettleborough was heard saying on the show. Hawkeye technology, which determines the trajectory of the ball, was not even consulted.

Virat Kohli confronts the umpire
The move sparked frustration in the Indian camp. Virat Kohli even approached referee Illingworth to express his displeasure. He reminded the referee of an almost identical case related to KL Rahul during the first test.
“The KL was the same in Perth: two tips, one bat and one pad,” Kohli told Illingworth.

In the Perth Test, Rahul was dropped despite inconclusive angles, with the third umpire overturning the decision on the field. Kohli's frustration reflected Indiais concerned about the inconsistency in the application of DRS protocols.
At the time of the incident, Marsh had not yet scored. At lunch, he managed to snatch two points from 10 balls, with Australia at 191/4, holding an 11-point lead. This early reprieve could, however, prove crucial in a closely contested match. Marsh was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin for 9.
